My First Day as a Food Donations Coordinator

At some point I will tell the tale of how I came to this place...this place where I get to spend my work day doing something that matters. But on 21 May 2012 I left the world of monetary banking and entered the world of food banking.  My official title is Food Donations Coordinator.  My role... I redistribute food.

Thousands of pounds of food is tossed in to the dumpster every day at your local grocery store.  Fortunately, many stores are becoming aware that there is another option- they can work with their local food pantry, food bank, or community agency to recover that edible "waste" and get on a plate in front of a hungry person.

This blog- which I intend to keep private for now- but perhaps will be opened up at some point- is a place for me to write about my experiences and file the ideas I come across- to assist in the effort to stop hunger.

My first day on the job- I followed along with my manager and we picked up 421 pounds of meat, produce, eggs and bread and delivered it to a women and children's shelter just one mile from this store.  This delivery provided enough healthy food for approximately 350 meals- enough food for about four people for an entire month.

I went to bed satisfied- and with some slight stiffness in my arms.  Lifting food is also a great workout.
